Purchasing is the function of procuring materials, supplies, and services, maintaining purchase order priorities, managing supply relationships, and ensuring high levels of performance to achieve quality, delivery and cost objectives.

This one-day workshop will focus on Fundamentals of Purchasing, Purchase order management and performance measurement.

Sourcing Strategies

The acquisition of materials, components, finished goods, and support services is a fundamental activity found in all manufacturing, distribution and service industries. Purchasing is concerned with acquiring the necessary resources to satisfy customer, manufacturing , and supply chain demand as determined by the goals of the business. Topics discussed include:

  • Strategic and tactical buying
  • Make-or-buy decision making
  • Cost avoidance analysis
  • Supplier relationships
  • Sourcing strategy
  • Optimal supplier selection
  • Supplier pricing alternatives
  • Negotiations with suppliers
  • Suppliers and product design
  • Supplier relationship management (SRM)

Purchase Order Management and Performance Management

This session is concerned with purchase order management. This process spans activities beginning with the identification of a replenishment requirement and ending with purchase order receiving, put-away, purchase order close-out, accounts payable and performance measurement. Topics discussed include:

  • Defining the purchasing management process
  • Purchase order methods
  • Purchase order flow from requirements identification to purchase order close-out
  • Using MRP, reorder point and kanban systems for order release
  • Vendor-managed inventory (VMI)
  • Receiving and order close-out
  • Supplier and internal purchase organization performance
  • International sourcing
  • Impact of the internet and computerized technologies on procurement

Prerequisite(s)
